Ground for Cintra was broken in 1816 and the magnificent building was completed in 1824 by entrepreneur and local builder, William Maris. The mansion was modeled after a section of a palace in Cintra Portugal, which had enchanted Maris. This 2 ½-story fieldstone home has distinguishing floor-plans that include a central octagonal entrance with flanking wings, a rear piazza, and a sunken garden, with a unique yellow pebble-dash exterior.
One measure of a community’s vitality is its library. Although the economy is having tough times, our library is booming. The Free Library of New Hope and Solebury, established in 1894, resides in a quaint former church in New Hope. The staff (Director Caroline Dechert and library assistant Patricia Lynch) works with a dedicated core of volunteers, numbering more than 60, to provide personalized service to the community and deliver excellent programs and services to the community of New Hope and Solebury and surrounding communities.
The Board of Trustees of the library invites you to come and see Cintra. “One Enchanted Evening at Cintra” is sure to be an exciting social gathering. All proceeds of this gala will go directly to the library due to the financial sponsorship of Deborah and Hayward Holbert. Tickets are $100.00 and are 100% tax-deductible. For more information, stop by the Free Library of New Hope & Solebury, log on to: www.nhslibrary.org or call 215-862-2253. Parking will be at the New Hope/Solebury High School.
The Board would like to thank the family of Joseph Stanley, who graciously offered their beautiful mansion for the event. The committee members include: Mayor Laurence Keller (Honorary Chair), Lynn Stoner and Lawrence P. Booth (CO-Chair), Alice Bentley, Mel & John Blady, Mary K. Darrah, Mary Lou Huchet, Reni Fetterolf, Deborah & Hayward Holbert, Richard & Ruth Hirschfield, Bruce Long, Susan Sandor, Stephen Stahl, Sylvia Walsh, and others wanting to remain anonymous.
