Event on Sunday, June 13, 2010 to Benefit Cancer Research
Includes Silent And Live Auctions
The Bucks County Chapter, Board of Associates of Fox Chase Cancer Center announces the 21st Annual Garden Party to take place on Sunday, June 13, 2010 at the historic Morgan Hill estate in Doylestown, PA. Scheduled from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm, guests will enjoy an open bar, hors d’oeuvres, buffet dinner and delicious desserts as well as the coveted restaurant raffle, silent and live auctions. Tickets are $100 per person. Patron Sponsorship starts at $250. To purchase tickets, email BCCFCCC@aol.com or call 215.534.9135.
Built in 1740 under the name Penn’s Grant Farm, Morgan Hill has a rich history dating back to the Neshamine Indians. They called the land “Neshannock” meaning “the double drinking place” or “where we drank from twice” for there were two natural springs on the site. Then in 1692, William Penn granted 9,000 acres in the central part of Bucks County to the Free Society of Traders. Morgan Hill was passed on to James Meredith and family, early settlers in Doylestown Township. Through Penn’s efforts, the Native Americans maintained friendly relations with the settlers. Records show that in 1725 Benjamin Franklin was a partner of William Meredith, brother of James.
Years later in 1847 the property was acquired by Samuel P. and Louisa A. James, falling prey to a Deed Poll in 1903. The next owners were General William and Mary Earle McCain (daughter Elizabeth was closely related to Senator John McCain) who commissioned extensive stone fences around the perimeter of the then 82-acre farm. Moving ahead to 1955, the Norris family purchased the property renaming it Bittersweet Farm for the encroaching vines that covered the hedgerows. Working together over a three-year period with the Bucks County Historical Society, Marjorie Norris began to plan the expansion of the house. The original 1740 dwelling is now the central portion of the house. It consisted of a first floor keeping room, two upstairs bedrooms and a basement cooking room. During the renovations, a 30 x 60 foot pool was constructed. Sadly Marjorie died before the estate was completed and husband Thomas never finished the job. Newly renamed and extensively renovated, Morgan Hill is now owned by Doylestown attorney Robert Gundlach and his wife Pamela. In 2000, Morgan Hill was chosen as the 25th Anniversary Bucks County Designer House.
