Originally known as Well's Ferry, and then Coryell's Ferry, New Hope got its name in an unusual, yet tragic manner. A prominent business man, Benjamin Parry, builder of the Parry Mansion, took over the Prime Hope Mill in 1784. Only six years later the mill burnt to the ground. In all his optimism, Parry reported to the local papers, "I am rebuilding with new hope." Since then the community has been known as New Hope.
